Eye Exams

Do You Need an Eye Exam?

Getting a vision exam is a quick and painless process. It should be done according to pre-existing eye disorders or based on your age. In general, doctors recommend getting a vision exam:

  • Every 5 to 6 years if you are 20 to 39 years old
  • Every 2 to 4 years if you are 40 to 54 years old
  • Annual eye exams if you are age 55 or older

Warning Signs

If you notice certain signs and symptoms of a new vision disorder or have existing vision problems, it is best to get an eye exam done as soon as possible. Some signs you might have deteriorating vision or are developing a vision disorder include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • Trouble focusing
  • Headaches
  • Glare
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Needing to squint
  • Glasses or contacts not working like they used to

Optometrists Can Help

Using the results of your vision exam, our eye doctor will determine what vision disorders you may have based on the shape and makeup of your eye. Eye exams can help detect a variety of issues, including:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Astigmatism
  • Myopia
  • Hyperopia
  • High blood pressure

During the eye exam, you will be seated and asked a series of questions using eye charts to determine what prescription lens best fits you. You will also provide your medical history to help determine if you are at risk for vision problems. Dr. Kamer might dilate your eyes and use imaging tests that involve bright lights directly in your eyes to get a detailed look at the physical makeup of your eye. These procedures do not cause any pain.
