Pediatric Eye Exams at Wilkins' Opticians

At Wilkins' Opticians, we offer comprehensive eye health exams to residents of Spartanburg and surrounding areas. Pediatric eye exams use particular diagnostic methods and exams to identify your child's ocular health and visual abilities. Doctors recommend that children have their first examination even before they start school. We have a dedicated optometrist who can treat common eye problems in children such as refractive errors, strabismus, conjunctivitis, and other eye-related issues.

When to Get Your Child Their First Eye Examination?

Children should undergo their first eye test at six months to check that their eyes are growing appropriately and have subsequent checkups every year, or at the very least by the time they are two or three years old. The test should be done again before they start school.

What to Expect During Pediatric Eye Exam

Be prepared to answer questions regarding your child's birth history, including any difficulties during pregnancy or delivery, birth weight, and any factors related to your child's visual health. Your pediatric eye doctor will also inquire about your family's ocular illness history as well as your child's medical history, including previous eye issues, treatments or operations, current medications, and any allergies they may have. We will provide various tests to ensure your child's eyes are healthy and working properly.

What Your Pediatric Eye Doctor Will Check

A comprehensive pediatric exam assesses various aspects of your child's eyes, including:

  • Acuity of vision
  • Sluggish eye
  • Stereopsis is a term that refers to the phenomenon of (3D vision)
  • Convergence
  • Color perception
  • Optical health

These visual abilities are critical for an infant's healthy growth and preparation for the school years ahead. Young children are continually gaining new abilities that will help them learn to read and write in the future. Visual skills, such as eye-hand coordination, visual perceptual skills, fine motor skills, and so on, are also necessary for academic performance.

Visual abilities are also assessed to rule out the presence of:

  • Amblyopia, often known as lazy eye
  • Strabismus, often known as crossed eyes
  • Convergence insufficiency—the inability to focus on objects that are close to you.
  • Depth perception issues
